The Z Sword is a very ancient and extremely heavy sword which was stuck in a tall mountain, in the Sacred World of the Kais.

Gohan Breaks the Z Sword

Try as they might, none of the Kais who attempted it could release the Z Sword. Supreme Kai brings Gohan to try and release the sword. Gohan transforms into a Super Saiyan and, with difficulty, pulls it free, stunning Kibito. Gohan then tries holding the sword which even Kibito could not and eventually trains to be able to wield it. However, when the Supreme Kai gives him a test to slash an object made of the densest material in the universe called Kachin, the Z Sword breaks releasing the Elder Kai.

In the game Dragon Ball Z: Shin Budokai - Another Road, Gohan and Supreme Kai go to the planet to get the Z Sword only to find Gohan can't remove it and saying that they may need the "chosen one" which is the Gohan of the Future who removes it easily; this suggest that the sword can only be pulled out by Gohan being the "chosen one" but this story was simply created for the game. The sword can be seen in the game as a projectile attack used by Gohan and Future Gohan in Elder Kai's Unlock Ability form.
The tale of the Z-sword mirrors the Arthurian legend of the sword in the stone.
