South Kaio (南 の 界王, Minami no Kaiō; FUNimation "South Kai", Viz "South Kaio"; Literally meaning "South of World King") oversees the Southern Galaxy.

Appearance

South Kaio is tall, has light pink skin, and is peace-loving. As a reference to his name, he has a small hint of a southern accent in his voice, although this is only in the FUNimation dub.

Biography

South Kaio starting the race between East Kaio and Goku.

South Kaio trained his fighters in a defensive manner. Fighters of his galaxy included Torbie, Froug, and Caterpy. His newest fighter was Papoi, whom he quickly understood to be weaker than Son Goku. Out of the fighters of his galaxy, Froug was able to reach the quarterfinals of the Next World Tournament, and Torbie managed to reach the semifinals before being eliminated by Pikkon.

He had the ability to raise the weight on training weights, as seen when North Kaio instructed him to increase Goku's training weights to ten tons each. South Kaio then shot out a wave, crying out the new weight as the weights were adjusted. He seemed confident that Goku would not be able to lift the far heavier load, but was baffled when Goku turned Super Saiyan and started to train with ease. He quickly left the scene with Papoi. East Kaio and himself did not mind the rivalry between North Kaio and West Kaio, and almost seemed to enjoy it. He was also the one to jokingly suggest that the failed Fusion attempt between Goku and Vegeta should be named Veku in Fusion Reborn. He, like East Kaio and West Kaio, made fun of how North Kaio had dead and cheered about it too. In Fusion Reborn, he also commented that Veku was fatter than North Kaio.

Films

North Kaio and South Kaio in Fusion Reborn.

South Kaio once again lost the Next World Tournament when his last fighter, Froug, was defeated by Goku in the semifinals in Dragon Ball Z: Fusion Reborn. He cheered for Pikkon just to spite North Kaio when Pikkon defeated Arqua.

Video games

South Kaio appeared in Dragon Ball Z: Buu's Fury.

South Kaio appeared in Dragon Ball Z: Shin Budokai where the player could buy a picture of him from the shop for his profile card.

South Kaio appeared in Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 3 in which he was seen with North Kaio if Goku or Vegeta used Fusion incorrectly and became Veku.

Trivia

  • South Kaio does not die in Dragon Ball Z.
  • South Kaio and North Kaio are the only Kaios ever shown in the manga.
  • South Kaio's southern accent in the FUNimation dub is likely a reference to the fact that he is the "South" Kaio.
