Biography

Yamu (left) and Spopovich (right)

In Dragon Ball Z, Yamu is paired up with Spopovich and sent to the 25th Tenkaichi Tournament to gather energy for Babidi, the evil wizard. The energy they are sent to gather is needed to awaken Majin Buu. During Spopovich's fight with Videl, Yamu stops him from murdering Videl, and orders him to stop fooling around.

After Kibito and Shin asked Son Gohan to turn into a Super Saiyan, Yamu and Spopovich entered the ring and drained all of Gohan's energy into a special container. They then flew off to their master. Unbeknownst to them, they were followed by Shin and some of the Z Warriors. When Yamu and Spopovich gave the energy to Babidi, he killed Spopovich as he decided that he was no longer useful. When Yamu saw this, he tried to escape. Puipui, one of Babidi's head cronies, killed him as he fled.

Yamu's importance as a plot device was shown when Vegeta willingly led and let Babidi turn him into a Majin – becoming ruthless, more powerful, and generally untied to his emotions – in order to fight against Goku. Vegeta had seen the cold callousness and power that had resulted from the transformation of Spopovich and Yamu and, in his one-track-mindedness about fighting Goku, wanted it for himself.

Video games

Spopovich and Yamu were both destroyed in Dragon Ball Z: Buu's Fury when Babidi expanded their inner energies. They never really made a great attempt to escape as they had tried in the anime.

Though he has yet to appear as a playable character in a video game, Yamu made a cameo appearance during Spopovich's super finishing move in Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 3 where Spopovich kicked an opponent into the air and he and Yamu then proceeded to drain the opponent's energy.

Trivia

  • Spopovich and Yamu have some similarities with Nappa and Vegeta. They are both bald, big, and muscular fighters. Both fighters also enjoy making their victims suffer (Spopovich toys with Videl at the tournament in a way similar to how Nappa toys with the Z Warriors). In a reaction similar to that of Vegeta, Yamu tries to calm his partner down during this fight. In the Ocean Group dub, Yamu and Spopovich are voiced by Brian Drummond and Michael Dobson, respectively, the voice actors of Vegeta and Nappa.
