The Death Ball (デス ボール, Desu Bōru) is an energy sphere attack used by Freeza.

Usage

Freeza lights a spark of energy on his index finger. Next, the spark may grow to the size of a small moon. Finally, Freeza throws it towards his opponent.

History

Freeza used this attack in attempt to destroy Planet Namek only to be caught in Son Goku's Large Genki Dama. Typically, this attack is used to destroy planets or as a last-ditch effort to kill an opponent.

Variations

Anime

Freeza used a variation of this attack to destroy Planet Namek. As it was different in size, shape, and color, it was likely not a "true" Death Ball, though it could easily be explained by Freeza holding the bulk of his power back to avoid being caught in the explosion and the risk of injury. To reflect on this lack of power, neither lightning nor screentone were applied on the Death Ball that Freeza conjured to destroy Planet Namek in a fit of rage before Goku's ascension to Super Saiyan. He also used both hands to create and throw it (instead of just his index finger).

Video games

Kuriza's Death Ball
Final Form Kuriza's Death Ball

It is named Destroy The Planet! in Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 3.

Kuriza used a Death Ball that was the shape of an enormous orange chestnut with a face on it.

Supernova

Main article: Supernova

The strongest version of the Death Ball, this was used as Coola's trump card against Goku in Dragon Ball Z: Cooler's Revenge. Unlike Freeza's version, this attack could be created near instantly. His attack was pushed back at him, however, and he was subsequently pushed by the force of it and Goku's Kamehameha into the Sun.

In Dragon Ball Z: The Return of Cooler, Metal Coola used a lesser version of the Death Ball while fighting against Goku on New Planet Namek. He dodged it via Instantaneous Movement. Even though Coola called it the Supernova, when Freeza used the attack to destroy Planet Vegeta, it took on the same appearance, probably meaning that once it reached a certain size it became a glowing orange whether it was used by Coola or Freeza.

In Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 3, Coola and Mecha Freeza's Ultimate Blast was also the Supernova, leading to the possibility that the Supernova could be a stronger version of the Death Ball. King Cold might also have had one or both of these attacks as they might be family attacks.

  • Note: King Cold has never been shown using this attack in either the anime, manga, or video games. He does, however, use a full powered version of the Death Beam in Budokai Tenkaichi 3. (In the game, only he and Super Perfect Cell use this version of the Death Beam.)

The name of this attack is actually not given anywhere in the anime nor manga (and can occasionally be called "Frieza Ball" by fans) but instead originates from the series' video games.

100% Death Ball

Main article: 100% Death Ball

The 100% Death Ball (100% デス ボール, 100% Desu Bōru) was the full powered version of the Death Ball. Freeza only used this attack once on Goku while he was underwater. Even though Goku manages to deflect the 100% Death Ball, it still destroyed another planet. It is one of the strongest versions of the Death Ball.

Barrage Death Ball

Main article: Barrage Death Ball

The Barrage Death Ball was used by Freeza against Goku while the latter was underwater. Freeza launched many miniature Death Balls at his head everytime he tried to come up so that he could not get any air.

Destroy The Planet!

Main article: Destroy The Planet!

Destroy The Planet! was a much larger version of the Death Ball. Freeza used this attack during his battle against Super Saiyan Goku in an attempt to destroy Planet Namek so Goku would not be able to breathe in space. The planet was not entirely destroyed, however, because Freeza held back too much power, but the tyrant revealed that Planet Namek would explode in five minutes.
