The Death Beam (デス ビーム, Desu Biimu), or Freeza Beam (フリーザ ビーム, Furiiza Biimu), is an energy beam attack used by Freeza and his family. Freeza extends his right arm and fires a small and very fast energy beam from his index finger, which barrels down and pierces through his opponent. Freeza is able to use the attack very quickly while maintaining precise aim.

History

Dragon Ball Z

Freeza first used the attack to kill an innocent Namekian (this happens only in the manga and not in the anime for unknown reasons). Later, Freeza murdered Vegeta in this fashion and heavily wounded Piccolo. Freeza was last seen performing this technique on Super Saiyan Goku to which he fired several, all of which Goku dodged. He finally hit Goku right in the face, but Goku took no damage at all, which throughly scared Freeza.

Future Cell was also able to perform the Death Beam, due to having some of Freeza's cells in his own body, and used the technique against Son Gohan and later to (randomly) execute Future Trunks Brief.

Video games

In many (if not all) video games, this move has been a staple in Freeza's move set. In Dragon Ball Z: Shin Budokai and onwards, the attack has had three beams instead of one, making it closer to the Barrage Finger Beam. Cell would also gain this move in several video games as well.

Variations

  • Barrage Death Beam – A single-handed, rapid fire version used by Final Form Freeza. It is performed like a normal Death Beam, but instead of a single beam Freeza fires multiple beams from his index finger. Freeza used this attack in his first encounter against Goku. Goku, however, was able deflect them all with just one hand (much to Freeza's surprise). Perfect Cell used this move against Gohan, but he was able to dodge all of the energy beams. Barrage Death Beam is named in Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 3. In the game, it is used by Final Form Freeza and Perfect Cell.
  • Chaotic Death End – A version of the Death Beam used by Cooler in his base form. Cooler shoots a regular Death Beam through the opponent's chest, followed by a few energy spheres to the falling opponent, inflicting a huge amount of damage. Used against Piccolo in "Cooler's Revenge" in order to take care of him so he would not cause any more trouble in Cooler's mission. Chaotic Death End is named in Dragon Ball: Raging Blast 2.
  • Crazy Finger Beam – A two-handed, rapid-fire version used by Third Form Freeza against Piccolo. It is performed by firing multiple Death Beams from both hands (fired from the middle and index fingers) in a very rapid succession. Crazy Finger Beam is named in the Budokai Tenkaichi video game series.
  • Double Death Beam – A variation of the Death Beam in which Freeza fires two Death Beams from his middle and index (one beam from his index finger and one from his middle finger) at the same time. Final Form Freeza tried to use this technique to kill Gohan, but Vegeta kicked Gohan out of the way of both beams.
  • Full Power Death Beam – A full powered version of the Death Beam which is fired like a normal Death Beam, but the beam is wider, brighter, and it has far more power. This attack was used by Super Perfect Cell to kill Future Trunks. It is used only by Cold and Super Perfect Cell, meaning that it is possible that this version of the Death Beam was developed by Cold himself and Cell most likely gained it, as he possesses some of Cold's cells. (This supports the idea that this technique originated from Cold). Full Power Death Beam is named in Budokai Tenkaichi 3.
  • Miren Desu Biimu – Miren Desu Biimu (三連 デス ビーム, Miren Desu Biimu; Literally meaning "Triple Death Beam")
