Garlic Junior in "Brief Chance for Victory"

Garlic Junior (ガーリック ジュニア, Gārikku Junia) is a Makyan.

Garlic Junior's name is a pun on the word Garlic.

Biography

Garlic Junior's father was imprisoned by Kami in the Dead Zone. This left Garlic Junior with a deep feeling of resentment and desire for revenge. Though defeated in Dragon Ball Z: Dead Zone, he later appeared during the Garlic Jr. Saga and battled once more against the combined efforts of Kuririn, Piccolo Junior, and Son Gohan.

A squat and off-putting looking dwarf of a Demon, Garlic Junior was the only villain in the Dragon Ball series who was successfully granted eternal life by the Dragon Balls (with the exception of Freeza in an alternate ending in Dragon Ball Z: Budokai), which his trio of lackeys, Nicky, Ginger, and Sansho, had gathered from around the globe. In the process, they had kidnapped Gohan for the Four-Star Ball that was sewn onto his cap and hurt Son Chichi, thus earning the ire of Son Goku. While Gohan was being held captive, Garlic Junior sensed his power and decided to make Gohan his disciple. Delirious with joy after the granting of his wish, Garlic Junior was then accosted by Goku and Kami and resolved to settle an old score with the latter. 300 earlier earlier, it was Kami who defeated his father, Garlic, for the throne of Kami, vanquishing him and his Demon hordes as a result. Now fearing nothing thanks to his newfound immortality, Garlic Junior intended to return the favor.

While Garlic Junior was preoccupied making good his grudge with Kami, Goku engaged his minions, who bulked up to twice their size in the ensuing battle. Not long after Kuririn and Piccolo (who had survived an earlier attack by the villain's underlings) made their appearance, the three henchmen met an early end. Piccolo sent Sansho flying into the ceiling and then fried him with a Ki Blast for a painful death. Goku killed both Ginger and Nicky with one direct Kamehameha. Beset now by the combined might of Planet Earth's greatest fighters, Garlic Junior transformed from his miniature stature to a gigantic size, shifting into Super Garlic Junior (スーパー ガーリック ジュニア, Sūpā Gārikku Junia), who was able to handle both Goku and Piccolo at once. It was a back-and-forth confrontation as the heroes could do no real damage to Super Garlic Junior since he was now immortal, but Goku and Piccolo were too resilient to fall to any of the monster's attacks. Livid, Super Garlic Junior opened up the portal known as the Dead Zone and intended to suck his enemies into the void whence they could never return. Upon seeing his father and friends in danger, the power latent within Gohan exploded and, enraged, he attacked and overwhelmed an awed Super Garlic Junior.

While he might live forever, Garlic Junior's powers were finite and Gohan knocked him into his own vortex to be trapped for all eternity.

Dragon Ball Z

Garlic Jr. Saga

Years later, Garlic Junior escaped imprisonment after the source of his power, Planet Makyo, comes close in axis to Planet Earth. Garlic Junior gathered his team of demon henchmen, the Spice Boys. The Monarchs include Spice, Vinegar, Tard, and Zalt. Garlic Junior then schemeed to take control of Planet Earth's population by use of the Black Water Mist, which caused those who breathed it in to become mindless Demon slaves under his rule. If kept unchecked, the Black Water Mist's effects would be irreversible after twenty-four hours. When Kami and Mister Popo investigated, they were captured, shrunk down, and trapped in glass bottles by Garlic Junior's henchmen. With only Gohan and Kuririn left to fight for Planet Earth, Garlic Junior and his cronies have a decisive advantage, especially since Piccolo was now a brainwashed servant under Garlic Junior's control. Another complicating matter was Planet Makyo. It orbited ever closer towards Planet Earth and served to amplify Garlic Junior and his henchmen's already considerable power.

A fight ensues in Kami's Lookout between Gohan, Kuririn, and the Spice Boys. When Kuririn is damaged in the fight, Gohan powers up and obliterates Tard and Zald with extremely powerful blasts. At this point, Piccolo is seen to be a rival and has presumably been turned into a slave of Garlic Junior. As Piccolo begins to attack Gohan, Kuririn tries to intervene, only to be bitten by Piccolo and be taken over by the Black Water Mist himself. However, this is all a ruse. When Piccolo - who was immune to the Black Water Mist all along – bit Kuririn, he told him to act as if he was possessed as well, so they could get in arm's reach of the bottles containing Kami and Popo. Kuririn and Piccolo begin their assault against Gohan, and when Garlic Junior tired of the show and instructs them to finish him off, they instead smash the bottles, releasing them both.

With the advantage and hostages lost, Garlic Junior again converts to his second form. Spice and Vinegar also pump up their bodies thanks to the power of Planet Makyo. At the same time, Kami and Popo make their way into the inside of the lookout, to use the Sacred Water to reverse the effects of the Black Water Mist. En route to the opening at the bottom of the lookout (where all the four winds of Earth blow), they must pass through the Divine Sage Realm (essentially a graveyard for former Kami), where the spirits of the former Guardians confront Kami and begin to assail him. Above, Piccolo (who is linked to Kami) starts to lose strength as a result of the beating, and Garlic Junior gains the upper-hand. In the meantime, Spice and Vinegar manage to topple Kuririn with ease and this ignites Gohan's anger once more, resulting in a chaotic battle between Gohan and the two henchmen at the same time. Gohan releases a seismic two-sided blast, which makes both Spice and Vinegar explode at the same time in midair. As the battle progresses, Garlic Junior reopens the Dead Zone, with Kami and Popo successfully being granted access to the Sacred Water and nullifying the Black Water Mist's effect on Earth. No longer handicapped by Kami's pain, Piccolo regained the ability to fight and he and Kuririn flew up to meet Garlic Junior and distract him. Gohan then fired a powerful Masenko into Planet Makyo, destroying it and leaving an emaciated and powerless Garlic Junior to fall prey to his Dead Zone once again, this time with no hope for return and doomed to spend an eternity in complete nothingness.

Video games

Garlic Junior appeared in Dragon Ball Z: Kyōshū! Saiya-jin.

Unlike many of his fellow film villains who appeared in the English dub of the Dragon Ball Z films and TV series, Garlic Junior was absent from most recent video games, with The Legacy of Goku video game series skipping his saga entirely. (In Dragon Ball Z: The Legacy of Goku II, Gohan did note that many creatures were still affected by the Black Water Mist, showing that the saga indeed happened).

Garlic Junior is playable in Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 2 and Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 3 in both his base and Super forms. Garlic Junior has an attack involving the Dead Zone, but uses it a bit differently. Instead of projecting the portal for his opponent to get sucked into, he actually throws it at his opponent and traps them within it temporarily as it takes a large amount of the victim's health.

Garlic Junior is one of only two filler characters to appear in Budokai Tenkaichi 2 and Budokai Tenkaichi 3, the other being Pikkon.

Trivia

  • Garlic Junior is the only villain, outside of Dragon Ball GT, to not be in Akira Toriyama's original manga, yet still have an entire saga named after him. He is the brainchild of Toei Animation.
  • Garlic Junior can apparently heal any hole made in his stomach as shown in "The World Awakens" (most likely due to his immortality).
  • In "The Heavens Tremble", Garlic Junior says that he has been imprisoned in the Dead Zone for ten years. Gohan (who is responsible for sealing him in the Dead Zone), however, is only four or five years old at the time and is younger than fourteen in the episode, though it could be explained by time moving differently in the Dead Zone.
  • Garlic Junior's fangs make him look like a vampire, which is likely a play on the name Garlic.
  • In the English dub of "Call for Restoration", Garlic Junior, who has just escaped the Dead Zone, refers to Piccolo as a Namekian. Piccolo (and Kami) were not aware of their heritage, however, until after Garlic Junior is trapped within the Dead Zone. How Garlic Junior came to learn this fact while in the Dead Zone is not explained.
  • During the Garlic Jr. Saga, Garlic Junior makes various comments referring to baseball. When Kuririn's Kamehameha curves upward in front of him, Garlic Junior will say, "What a curve ball." When he beats Piccolo, Garlic Junior will say, "Strike three, you're out."
