Along with Son Goku and Kuririn training, other fighters from all over the land also trained in their different ways for the upcoming Tenkaichi Tournament.

Kuririn and Goku were introduced to Turtle Hermit's new morning training. Turtle Hermit told Goku and Kuririn that they had to plow a field using only their hands. After they were finished, Turtle Hermit said that the fields would get bigger every day of training. The boys then began to plow through the dirt and a few hours later they completed it. They were allowed some rest when breakfast was ready. Lunch had cooked everyone a feast. Unfortunately, Kuririn put a little too much pepper in his food and some of it floated towards Launch. She sneezed and switched into her mean personality. She shot bullets at Goku, Kuririn, and Turtle Hermit making them run out of the Kame House. Turtle Hermit thought it would be a good idea if they ate out that morning. They had breakfast in a restaraunt.

Next, the two had to study until lunch time. Turtle Hermit explained to them that a trained body was a waste without a trained mind. After lunch, Turtle Hermit proposed that they take a nap from 12:30 P.M. until 1:30 P.M. The three of them then discussed the upcoming Tenkaichi Tournament.

After napping, the next task was construction work. Turtle Hermit told them that they could earn some part-time money, plus use tools this time. Turtle Hermit whispered to the Construction Foreman that the two could do the work of five men each, but the Construction Foreman did not think the boys were capable of doing that. Goku and Kuririn shovelled, unloaded, and wheelbarrowed faster than the other workers using machinery. Kuririn thought back to the time he trained at the Orinji Temple and how the other trainees bullied him because he was short and weak. After he remembered this, Kuririn hit the pickaxe so hard that its top broke and flew into the air landing right in front of Turtle Hermit and the Foreman. The Foreman said he would pay them the wage of six men each.

After the construction work, Turtle Hermit told them to cool down by swimming. Goku and Kuririn, however, wanted to learn martial arts and were tired of the tasks. Turtle Hermit told them that they need to build strength and that he would teach them martial arts when they could move a large boulder. Kuririn said it was impossible for anyone to move a boulder of that size, but Turtle Hermit responded by moving the boulder a few inches. Goku then moved a boulder of a similar size a few feet. Turtle Hermit told the two that he had made a mistake and pointed at an extremely large boulder. He told them when they were able to move that boulder they would get martial arts training from him. Goku tried and failed at moving it. They asked if Turtle Hermit could move it. Turtle Hermit stared at it and yelled for them to continue their own training.

Turtle Hermit instructed Goku and Kuririn to do ten laps from the shore to an island in the middle of a lake. After they had jumped in, Turtle Hermit informed them that it was filled with Sharks. They could not hear what he had said, but got the idea soon enough when a Shark attacked them. After they reached the island, they tried to rest only to be attacked by a Dinosaur.

After that rigorous training, their next training exercise required them to be tied by rope to a tree. Turtle Hermit explained to them that sometimes one is cornered and must dodge the enemy. Goku asked what he and Kuririn would be dodging from. Turtle Hermit then hit a beehive and hid behind a tree. The Bees then began to attack Goku and Kuririn. After that, both Goku and Kuririn were stung from head to toe. Turtle Hermit told them that their first day of training was over, and that it had been an easy day compared to the coming months. He informed them that they had to wear shells that weighed 20 kilos, which is why he had become known as the Turtle Hermit.
