"What's a Goku?"
King Cold in "Another Super Saiyan?"

King Cold (コルド 大王, Korudo Daiō; FUNimation "King Cold"; Literally meaning "Korudo Great King") is the father of Coola and Freeza. He apparently runs Freeza's Force, but does not make his presence as the organization's leader known to any of its members, thus it could be said that his son, Freeza, is the organization's true leader since he runs it from behind closed doors.[1]

King Cold's Japanese name is a pun on the word Kōrudo, or Cold in English.

Appearance

Cold ranks among the tallest villains in the Dragon Ball universe and his physical appearance is very similar to his sons, looking nearly identical to Second Form Freeza. His skin is darker than that of Freeza, but lighter than that of Cooler. He wears the standard Saiyan Armor over his chest along with a black cape and the "dome" on his head is colored dark blue, like Cooler's (though it sometimes appears dark blue-green in the anime). Despite the fact that both of his sons have demonstrated the ability to transform, it is unknown if Cold also has the ability to change shape. Cold has a calm, high-class attitude with elegant mannerisms. Not unlike his son Freeza, he displays a great deal of arrogance and impatience. He seems to display a high level of concern for his family, though he quickly becomes annoyed with how long it takes Freeza to finish off an opponent. Despite being the head of Freeza's Force, Cold's role and very existence are unknown to all but his own family and a select few henchmen directly under his control.

Biography

Dragon Ball Z

Frieza Saga

Although Cold did not appear during the Frieza Saga personally, he received his first mention after Son Goku knocked Freeza into a plateau and Freeza said that Goku was the first person to hurt him besides his "loving parents".

Trunks Saga

Cold and Mecha Freeza
Cold before dying at the hands of Future Trunks.

During the Trunks Saga, sometime after Freeza's defeat at Goku's hands, Cold and his crew searched through the debris of the destroyed Planet Namek. Though in disbelief that his son could be destroyed by a mere planet's explosion, he vowed that if Freeza had truly been defeated then he himself would avenge his son. Eventually, Cold's scientists discovered Freeza's battered remains and managed to rebuild him with mechanical limbs. When Freeza awakened, he explained to his father about the Super Saiyan that had nearly destroyed him. The two discovered that Goku was on his way to Earth. Though Cold recommended that they destroy Earth from space, Freeza devised a plan to arrive on Earth before Goku and kill the Earthlings (in an attempt to make Goku suffer). Freeza would then have a rematch with Goku and, with Cold's help, victory would be assured.

When Cold and Mecha Freeza arrived on Earth, Future Trunks showed up and transformed into a Super Saiyan. He easily dispatched Mecha Freeza (and all of Cold's minions) with his sword. Cold offered Future Trunks the opportunity to take his son's place (even offering planets as well). Trunks unabashedly declined, which did not worry Cold as he believed the boy's battle power stemmed solely from his sword. In an attempt to acquire Trunks' sword, Cold asked him if he could examine the blade. Cold, with the sword in his hand, struck at the mysterious youth, but to his great horror the blade was effortlessly caught. Future Trunks began to overpower Cold, and with his other hand he shot a Ki Blast which went right through Cold's chest and sent him flying. Cold began to beg for his life and said that he would give Future Trunks all of the planets he had conquered, but his pleas for mercy fell on deaf ears as Trunks quickly finished him off with yet another Ki Blast (Cold only begged for his life in the anime. In the manga, Future Trunks killed him immediately).

Alternate timeline

Cold and Mecha Freeza journeyed to Earth to destroy it, but Future Son Goku arrived early and intervened, killing both Cold and Freeza. It was at this point that Cold and Freeza had their DNA sampled by Doctor Gero's insect tracking device. This event occurred in the main timeline and alternate timeline.

Imperfect Cell Saga

Cold was mentioned during the Imperfect Cell Saga when the Z Warriors believed that he was in Gingertown. It later turned out to be Cell. Cold also appeared in one of Cell's flashbacks.

Great Saiyaman Saga

Just after the Cell Games Saga, Cold, Freeza, and four deceased members of the Ginyu Force began a friendship with Cell during the Great Saiyaman Saga. They assisted him in his quest to find a way back to Earth from Hell via torturing the Ogre guardians. He was punished when Goku and Pikkon showed up and defeated them. Before he could know what had happened, Cold was knocked out when Pikkon elbowed him in the stomach. Cold was later shown complaining in a jail cell within Hell, saying that he could have at least had a shower.

Kid Buu Saga

Sometime after Cold was released from prison, he, along with many past villains, watched the final battle between Goku and Kid Boo via a Crystal Ball during the Kid Buu Saga. He also laughed at one point when Goku refused to throw the Genki Dama with Vegeta in the way, but his smile faded when he saw Mister Satan take Vegeta's injured body aside, leaving Goku to kill Kid Boo with the Genki Dama.

Dragon Ball GT

Super 17 Saga

During the Super 17 Saga, Cold and many other past villains were briefly seen escaping from Hell. Although his fate was never shown or explicitly stated, it could be assumed that he was defeated by one of the heroes and sent back to Hell.

Video games

Cold appeared during cutscenes in Dragon Ball Z: Budokai and Dragon Ball Z: Burst Limit and has a support item named after him in Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 2. He also appears briefly in Dragon Ball Z: The Legacy of Goku II and Dragon Ball Z: Supersonic Warriors 2, the latter of which he appears during Mecha Freeza's ultimate attack. He makes his first playable appearance in Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 3 where he is unlocked by completing the Cell Games on Hard difficulty. In this game, his only Story mode appearance is in the What If Saga level entitled Unexpected Help where he is the final opponent.

Battle power

Although Cold never actually engages in a proper fight in either the manga or anime, his battle power is mentioned several times. In the manga, Son Gohan, Kuririn, and Tenshinhan acknowledged that he had "a huge Ki just like Freeza's". In the FUNimation dub, Goku (as narrator) seemed to doubt that Future Trunks could take on Cold by himself (despite having effortlessly defeated Freeza moments before). In Dragon Ball Kai and Dragon Ball Z Kai, Tenshinhan, Vegeta, and Cold himself referenced Cold as having even greater power than Freeza. Budokai Tenkaichi 3 states that "Officially, King Cold's strength is greater than Frieza or Cooler's". Daizenshū 7, however, states that he is "somewhat inferior" to Freeza. [2]

Despite his supposed strength, Cold was never given the opportunity to showcase his abilities (outside of the video games). Like both of his sons, he was easily dispatched by a Super Saiyan.

Techniques

  • Bukujutsu – Cold has able to fly through use of Ki.
  • Cold Family Power – His Ultimate Blast in Budokai Tenkaichi 3. It is a team attack where both he and Mecha Freeza attack their opponent as a team followed by Cold finishing off the opponent with a sword strike and an energy blast.
  • Dātii Surasshu – Dātii Surasshu (ダーティー スラッシュ, Dātii Surasshu; Literally meaning "Dirty Slash")
  • Full Power Death Beam – A powered up version of the Death Beam. This attack comes from Budokai Tenkaichi 3 and only he and Super Perfect Cell can use this attack in the game.
  • Ki Blast – The most basic form of energy wave.
  • Super Explosive Wave – He creates a massive explosion with himself as the nexus. This attack comes from Budokai Tenkaichi 3.
  • Survival – Cold can breathe without atmospheric air, enabling him to survive in space. It may be possible that like his sons, Cold has the ability to survive even the most horrifying injuries, as he is still conscious and capable of smooth speech despite having a hole in his chest.
  • Swordmanship – Fighting using a sword. He seems to have some knowledge of swords and sword fighting. This is based on his statements to Future Trunks and his attempt to strike Trunks down after being lent his sword in the manga and anime. He also uses a sword in Budokai Tenkaichi 3, which is likely inspired by this.

Trivia

  • Cold's last words to Future Trunks differ between the Japanese dub and the English dub. In the Japanese dub, he tries to bribe Future Trunks once again by offering him planets to rule over. In the English dub, he lies that though his son was evil, he himself only wanted peace.
  • Although Cold appears to be one of the tallest villains in the Dragon Ball universe, his exact size is not always consistent. The manga depicts Cold as being nearly triple the height of Mecha Freeza. The anime depicts him with varying sizes. In Budokai Tenkaichi 3, Cold's height is equal to that of Second Form Freeza.
  • As Unexpected Help is the final scenario in Budokai Tenkaichi 3's Dragon History mode, it is interesting to note that Cold is essentially the final opponent of the entire "Dragon History".
  • While the original Japanese anime and most dubs (including the Ocean Group dub) give Cold a deep, brutish voice, the FUNimation dub portrays Cold with a strong, proper English accent.[3]
  • Of his family, Cold is the only one who does not transform, fight Goku (in the main timeline), or return from his previous defeat with cybernetic limbs.
  • If Cold fights Freeza (as well as Mecha Freeza) or Cooler in Budokai Tenkaichi 3 and defeats them, Cold will say that he was always "a horrible son".
