Dr. Brief (ブリーフ 博士, Burii Hakase; FUNimation "Dr. Brief", Viz "Dr. Brief") is an elderly, brilliant, and eccentric scientist. He is the father of Bulma, and one of the smartest and richest men in the world. He lives in Metro West with his wife and their many pets. Like nearly everyone in his family (with the exception of Vegeta), Dr. Brief's name is a pun on underwear (briefs).

Appearance

Dr. Brief is easy-going and friendly. He rarely leaves his home, even if it means almost certain death. During the Majin Buu Saga, he and his wife, Mrs. Brief, refuse to leave their pets even after Capsule Corporation has been specifically targeted for destruction. This is probably due to the fact that they know they can always be wished back with the Dragon Balls. He is often seen tinkering with a number of complicated gadgets while his beloved pets surround him. His favorite pet is a small black cat named Tama (Scratch in the English dubs of the anime), who usually sits on his shoulder.

He is a short, stocky man. His hair is very similar to that of his daughters, but is gray. He also has a large gray mustache. He dons a white lab coat with a blue undershirt, and black pants. He is almost always seen smoking a cigarette and wears large glasses. In the early Dragon Ball series, Dr. Brief is depicted as a little bit of a pervert when Bulma tries a Hoi Poi Capsule and dirty magazines are in the contents.

Biography

Dr. Brief graduated from the Metro West College department of science and engineering. He completed his doctorate in the department of science and engineering graduate program at that same college. His major was physical science. He established Capsule Corporation after his invention of a revolutionary item, the Hoi Poi Capsule. Until Dragon Ball GT, he was the representative director and president of his company. His hobby was collecting dirty magazines despite being the most successful individual of the 700s. [1]

Dragon Ball

Brief's role in Dragon Ball is very minimal.

Dragon Ball Z

Brief made Son Goku a spaceship for his travel to Planet Namek, modeled after the spaceship of Kami and the one left by Goku. He and Bulma restored Artificial Human No. 16, who had been badly damaged by Semi-Perfect Cell during the Imperfect Cell Saga, showing off their technical know-how. He also heavily modified and improved Goku's spaceship and created a Gravity Room for Vegeta to train in. Usually Dr. Brief was seen with a cigarette in his mouth (which had been edited out in the early English dubs). As Bulma's father, it was his knack for hi-tech wizardry that was passed down to her.

Dragon Ball GT

Trunks Brief reluctantly took his place as president of Capsule Corporation in Dragon Ball GT, therefore suggesting that Brief had either passed away or finally retired.

In the alternate timeline, it was revealed by Future Bulma Brief that her father had passed away sometime before 780 Age, however, the cause of his death was not revealed. He may have been killed when the Future Artificial Humans destroyed Metro West or died of natural causes.
