Slugg in Dragon Ball Z: Lord Slug

Slugg (スラッグ, Suraggu; FUNimation "Lord Slug") is a Namekian.

Slugg's Japanese name is a pun on the word Suraggu, or Slug in English.

Biography

Cave drawings seen at the main title screen of the film.

Slugg was a Super Namekian banished with other others of his kind from Planet Namek sometime around 261 Age. Since then, he had been gathering an army and become a conqueror of planets using terra-freeze and other methods to capture entire worlds.

Part of the main title screen of the film showcases what appear to be cave drawings of a giant Namekian, evidently Slugg, as well as a creature with wings. It is unknown what race the smaller beings were, but they appeared to worship Slugg.

Origins

There were two different conflicting versions of Slugg's origin.

The first account, told in the Japanese dub and FUNimation sub, stated that Slugg was sent off Planet Namek as a baby to Planet Slugg, much like Nameless Namekian had been sent to Planet Earth, in order to save him from the cataclysms affecting his homeworld. He had a rare Namekian mutation since birth that made his heart pure evil. Possibly related to this mutation, he was also very powerful – a kind of Namekian called a Super Namekian.

The second account, told in the FUNimation dub, stated that Slugg was born and lived on the original Planet Namek sometime prior to the climate shift that nearly wiped out the Namekians. Slugg, along with other Namekians, discovered the key to unlocking a higher consciousness within. They were known as the Super Namekians, but they soon became intoxicated with their new power and misused it. With the power of the Namek Dragon Balls, the Namekians (most likely including Grand Elder) used Polunga to banish the Super Namekians from their planet for good. The Super Namekians became nomads, moving from planet to planet and taking what they wanted. Slugg was probably the last surviving member of these exiled Super Namekians.

In any event, Slugg formed an army of Demon-like soldiers on Planet Slugg. Slugg's Demon Clan conquered planets by freezing them to make them suitable worlds for his soldiers. He would sometimes alter a planet to turn it into a Planet Cruiser and used it to move to his next target. He went on conquering more and more planets, star systems, and nebulae for centuries.

Arrival on Earth

Slugg eventually reached Planet Earth and used the Dragon Balls to wish for eternal youth. He started to freeze the planet in order to reshape it into a spaceship, but his plan was foiled after a back-and-forth battle against Son Goku, who then used the Genki Dama to send Slugg into the machine that was freezing Planet Earth and destroyed him once and for all.

Dragon Ball Z Gaiden: Saiya-jin Zetsumetsu Keikaku

Slugg appeared in Dragon Ball Z Gaiden: Saiya-jin Zetsumetsu Keikaku. He also appeared in Dragon Ball: Plan to Eradicate the Super Saiyans, the remake of Dragon Ball Z Gaiden: Saiya-jin Zetsumetsu Keikaku., where he was revived as a Ghost Warrior alongside Tullece, Freeza, and Cooler. In the original version, Slugg could not die unless he was killed the same way he was before, which resulted in Son Gohan whistling once again, crippling Slugg with pain, and Piccolo finishing him off with a large energy blast. In the remake, he could not be killed unless the Destron Gas machine was first destroyed.

Dragon Ball Z: Fusion Reborn

Slugg appeared on the Dragon Ball Z: Fusion Reborn poster, but was not actually in the film.

  • Bukujutsu
  • Darkness Blaster – The ultimate technique of Giant Slugg (巨大化 スラッグ, Kyodaika Suraggu). A devastating attack similar to the Mouth Energy Wave.
  • Darkness Eye Beam – Slugg is able to use Eye Lasers in both his base form and his giant form.
  • Dākunesu Tsuin Sutā – Dākunesu Tsuin Sutā (ダークネス ツイン スター, Dākunesu Tsuin Sutā)
  • Finger Beam – Slugg releases a thin energy beam from his finger tip, which causes major damage. This attack is also in Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 2 and Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 3.
  • Instantaneous Movement – Slugg teleports a few feet from his throne to a 3D image displayer that shows Gohan fighting against his soldiers in Lord Slug.
  • Ki Blast
  • Kyodaika – The Namekian ability to increase one's size. Slugg uses this ability after regenerating his damaged arm that Goku has broken and it makes Slugg nearly invincible.
  • Mystic Attack – The ability to extend the length of one's arms.
  • Power of Darkness – Slugg's Ultimate Blast in Budokai Tenkaichi 2. Slugg knocks his opponent into the air and uses the Mystic Attack to grab them. Slugg then attacks his opponent with a series of punches and finally knocks them down. This attack was changed in Budokai Tenkaichi 3. Slugg knees the opponent in the air, allowing the opponent to fall to the ground. Next, Slugg grabs the motionless opponent by the throat, knocking him away with three punches. Finally, Slugg grabs the opponent using the Mystic Attack, punches the opponent in the air, shoots the Eye Beam at them.
  • Telekinesis – Slugg appears to have some form of telekinesis or ability to manipulate objects with his mind, as he draws Bulma Brief to him with an invisible force.
  • Telepathy – Slugg has the ability to scan the minds of people to discover information that is hidden from him. He uses this ability on Bulma to discover how to find the Dragon Balls.

Trivia

  • In the Japanese dub of Lord Slug, Slugg does not tell people that he is a Namekian. He does say it in Plan to Eradicate the Saiyans.
  • In Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 3, North Kaio claims that Slugg is from the "destroyed Planet Namek" and that he escaped Planet Namek as a baby, confirming the Japanese dub and FUNimation sub accounts of Slugg's origins.
  • It is also interesting to note that Slugg dies in a similar manner as Tullece in Dragon Ball Z: The Tree of Might. Both are hit with a Genki Dama from Goku, knocking them into the device they used to "modify" Planet Earth, destroying both villain and device and returning Planet Earth to normal.
  • Slugg's appearance on the film poster for Fusion Reborn implies that he may have originally made a cameo in that film, but was removed during development.
  • Slugg appears in a Dragon Ball Z video game for the first time in Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 2 where he is one of only two playable Namekians (the other being Piccolo) and the only one with a second form. Slugg returns to the roster in Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 3. In both games, Slugg explains during his Story mode that he knows Goku is a Saiyan and hopes he is a good challenge for him.
  • Slugg has a number of similarities with Piccolo Daimao. Both are pure evil Namekians, use the Dragon Balls to wish for eternal youth, and have four top henchmen (Angila, Dorodabo, Medamatcha, and Zeeun for Slugg and Piano, Tambourine, Cymbal, and Drum for Piccolo Daimao). Also, Goku uses his Penetrate! maneuver to rip a hole through both of them.
  • Slugg is one of the few Namekians seen eating solid food (he eats a handfull of some sort of pills, possibly for his health).
  • Slugg and Tullece have the same pose for their character select art work in Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 3.
