Artificial Human No. 19

From Dragon Ball Encyclopedia, the ''Dragon Ball'' wiki

"Do not try to escape. Yes, it is useless. Until I have your energy, I will never let you go."
Artificial Human No. 19 in "The Secret of Dr. Gero"

Artificial Human No. 19 (人造 人間 19号, Jinzō Ningen Jūkyū-Gō; FUNimation "Android No. 19") is an Artificial Human and Doctor Gero's nineteenth creation.

Biography

No. 19 was designed to serve Gero's vendetta against Son Goku, who had overthrown the Red Ribbon Army as a child.

Dragon Ball Z

No. 19's struggle against Super Saiyan Vegeta.

No. 19 is the final Artificial Human designed by Doctor Gero to be created exclusively from synthetic technology (although in each alternate timeline, this respect goes to Artificial Human No. 16 because No. 19 only exists in the series' main timeline). He, accompanied by Artificial Human No. 20 (in reality, a rebuilt Doctor Gero), first appears during an assault on an island nine miles southwest of Metro South.

Having the ability to go undetected by Ki signatures, the Z Warriors are unable to sense their presence, which culminates in Yamcha's tragic run-in with the pair. Gero grips onto Yamcha's face and lifts him off of the ground. As his energy is sapped through Gero's gripping hand, Gero uses his other hand to impale Yamcha's chest.

No. 19 later challenges Goku, who then proceeds to transform into Super Saiyan, shifting the fight in his favor. Shortly after however, the heart disease foretold by Future Trunks begins affecting Goku, who collapses and is powerless against No. 19's attempt at Energy Absorption.

Suddenly, before No. 19 could execute the finishing blow, he is sent flying aside by a surprise kick to the face. Fuming, No. 19 rose and looked upon his assailant, revealed to be Vegeta. Believing Vegeta was of roughly the same battle power as Goku, the Artificial Human arrogantly challenged the Saiyan, but was shocked when Vegeta transformed into a Super Saiyan as well. No. 19 battled Vegeta, but with Vegeta's mercilessness, No. 19 was trounced about by the Saiyan prince until he finally grabbed hold of Vegeta's arms and claimed that he would not release Vegeta until he had sapped all of his energy. This prompted Vegeta to prop his feet onto No. 19's face and slowly tear off his arms. Now terrified, No. 19 desperately attempted to make an escape, however, Vegeta barraged him with his Big Bang Attack and No. 19's fate was made clear when his smoking head was shown after the explosion.

Dragon Ball GT

No. 19 is shown again during the Super 17 Saga when Son Goten and Trunks Brief launch a barrage of Ki shots into an alley, comically resulting in his head flying off once again. He is also seen firing energy blasts in a flashback in the final episode of DBGT.

Techniques

  • 3D Scan Mode – A Scouter embedded within the No. 19's eyes that can detect battle power and location.
  • Bionic Punisher – A synthetic form of the Eye Lasers used by No. 19 and No. 20.
  • Energy Absorption – A technique where No. 19 takes hold of an opponent with his hands and proceeds to drain their energy through his palms. During the Androids Saga, No. 19 uses this as a last resort against Vegeta, who spends the duration of their battle outclassing him, but is yet again overpowered when Vegeta tears off No. 19's arms.
  • Energy Attack – The most basic form of energy wave used by Artificial Humans.
  • Eye Beam – No. 19 uses this move in Dragon Ball: Raging Blast.
  • False Courage – A move No. 19 uses in the Budokai Tenkaichi video game series and Dragon Ball: Raging Blast.
  • Flight – The ability to fly without the use of ki.
  • Foton Shūto – Foton Shūto (フォトン シュート, Foton Shūto; Literally meaning "Photon Shot")
  • Full Power Energy Wave – A move No. 19 uses in the Budokai Tenkaichi video game series and Dragon Ball: Raging Blast.
  • Photon Wave – A powerful energy wave fired from the palm of No. 19's hand.
  • Pump Up – A move No. 19 uses in the Budokai Tenkaichi video game series and Dragon Ball: Raging Blast.

Trivia

Artificial Human No. 19000
  • No. 19 is the first character to defeat a Super Saiyan when he fights against Goku, though Goku is at a disadvantage with his Heart Virus and is initially unaware of the Artificial Human's Energy Absorption ability.
  • According to Akira Toriyama, No. 19 and No. 20 were originally meant to be the Artificial Humans which Future Trunks foretold of attacking Planet Earth. His editor, however, decided that the two looked outdated and ridiculous, and so he opted to continue the saga in favor of Artificial Human No. 17 and Artificial Human No. 18.[citation needed]
  • Red liquid spews from his arms when Vegeta rips them off, making it look like he is losing blood. For a purely synthetic Artificial Human, however, he should be losing oil. (In fact, Vegeta even refers to it as oil when he mentions that he has an oil leak). The color, therefore, should be black. The Artificial Humans do use a liquid that resembles a bright substance, but this a synthesized red liquid substance that flows through their bio-mechanical structure.
  • The effect used for No. 19's voice varies with each dub. In the original Japanese dub of Dragon Ball Z, as well as most other dubs such as the Ocean Group dub, he has the voice of an ordinary Human. In the FUNimation dub, however, he has a nasally animatronic voice save for the FUNimation Remastered Box Sets released by the studio which have the voice filter removed.
  • In the North American version of the Budokai video game series, No. 19's voice is greatly similar to the voice of Majin Boo.
  • Despite him not having a soul, he somehow comes back when Super No. 17 breaks out of Hell. No. 16, however, does not. This can be explained by referring to the fact that he originally dies as a "villain" and is sent to Hell, whereas No. 16 dies as a "hero" and likely is not sent to Hell.
  • A new design for an Artificial Human character named Artificial Human No. 19000 in Dragon Ball Online has a similar design to No. 19. The character's clothes are almost exactly like that of No. 16.
